Christmas Gift Guide: Gift Ideas by Who You're Buying For

Christmas gift ideas sorted by who they're for — coffee lovers, Switch 2 players, DIYers, smart-home fans, runners, home cooks and families — each linked to our reviews and the one thing to check before you buy.

Updated October 26, 2026

Short answer

Start with what they already use, not with a product: most gifts only work with one console, one coffee setup or one smart-home system. If you don't know their setup, pick something that works on its own: a well-made hand tool, a cast-iron skillet or a family board game. Before you order, check the exact model and the seller on Amazon; we list no prices because they change often.

For a coffee lover

Most coffee gifts only work with one brewing method, so find out how they make coffee first. For anyone who brews with ground coffee, a burr grinder like the Baratza Encore, which has 40 grind settings, is the biggest single upgrade; it isn't the right grinder for espresso. A kitchen scale like the OXO 11 lb helps with any method. For a smaller gift, the AeroPress needs only a kettle.

For a Nintendo Switch 2 player

A microSD Express card is the gift most Switch 2 owners end up needing: Nintendo says the console needs a card labeled microSD Express to store Switch 2 games, and a regular microSD card can't be used for that. For someone who plays on the TV, the Switch 2 Pro Controller is the comfortable upgrade, and a second pair of Joy-Con 2 adds a player. Check the box says Switch 2: Joy-Con 2 don't work on the original Switch.

For a DIYer or a new homeowner

Hand tools make good gifts when they replace something people reach for every week. The Klein 32500HD puts seven tips and four nut drivers in one handle, which covers most screws around a house; it isn't insulated, so it's not for live electrical work. The Estwing E16C is a 16 oz hammer forged in one piece and made in the USA. For someone who wants pliers in a pocket, the Leatherman Skeletool CX weighs 5 ounces; its sheath is sold separately.

For a smart-home fan

Smart-home gifts only work inside one system, so check what they already use. For a Philips Hue home, the Hue Dimmer Switch is a battery-powered wall switch that works without Wi-Fi, and the Hue Play light bars add color behind a TV or monitor but need a Hue Bridge. For someone starting out, the Echo Dot Max is a speaker with a built-in Zigbee, Matter and Thread smart home hub. The Hue Smart Plug brings a favorite lamp or a string of lights into the Hue app; it switches on and off but doesn't dim.

For a runner or a hiker

For a runner training for a race, the Garmin Forerunner 265 has a bright AMOLED screen and recovery guidance; it has no maps. For long trips where battery matters more than the screen, Garmin rates the Instinct 3 Solar 45 mm at up to 28 days as a smartwatch. The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 are open-ear headphones that leave them able to hear traffic. For camping, the Jetboil Flash boils water fast for meals and coffee, but it doesn't simmer.

For a home cook

The Lodge 12-inch cast-iron skillet comes pre-seasoned and goes from stovetop to oven; it's heavy and needs hand washing. The Le Creuset Signature 5.5-quart Dutch oven needs no seasoning and suits someone who braises or bakes bread often, but it weighs about 11 pounds empty. For a regular baker, the KitchenAid Artisan is a 5-quart tilt-head stand mixer; for someone who bakes a few times a year, a hand mixer is enough.

For family game night

Match the game to the group's size and ages. Ticket to Ride is listed for 2 to 5 players, ages 8 and up, and suits groups new to strategy games. CATAN suits groups that like trading and negotiation and is listed for 3 to 4 players, ages 10 and up. Azul works for 2 to 4 players, including couples. For young children who want stories without a screen, the Toniebox 2 is an audio player they run themselves; the figures add up and there's no power adapter in the box.
