Garmin Instinct 3 Solar (45mm)
A rugged 45 mm GPS watch with a solar-charged, always-readable memory-in-pixel screen, multi-band GPS and a built-in LED flashlight. It's built for long battery life outdoors, not for maps or a bright color display.
Quick verdict
Yes, if battery life and toughness matter more than maps or a color screen. The Garmin Instinct 3 Solar 45 mm is rated at up to 28 days as a smartwatch, with solar extending that, and adds multi-band GPS, a flashlight and a sunlight-readable screen. Skip it if you want on-watch maps, a bright color display or a smartwatch for apps.
- Best for:
- Weeks of battery for outdoor use.
- Watch out:
- No maps; monochrome screen.

Part of our buying guide: Choosing a Garmin Instinct: Instinct 3 Solar, Instinct 3 AMOLED or Instinct E
Our Take
The Instinct 3 Solar is Garmin's rugged outdoor watch for people who'd rather not charge every few days. Garmin rates the 45 mm version at up to 28 days as a smartwatch, and "unlimited" with solar. That assumes all-day wear with 3 hours a day outside in 50,000 lux, which is bright direct sun. GPS-only tracking is rated at up to 40 hours, or 130 with solar, and multi-band GPS at up to 24 hours. The screen is a monochrome memory-in-pixel display, readable in sunlight, behind Power Glass. The case is fiber-reinforced polymer, rated 10 ATM, and the watch weighs 52 g. Garmin's spec list includes multi-band GPS, an LED flashlight, Garmin Pay and sleep, training-readiness and Pulse Ox tracking, but no on-watch maps. HikingGuy's hands-on review (updated August 2026) reports roughly 75 to 150 hours of GPS depending on sun. It also notes there are no maps, the interface is less polished than Garmin's Fenix, and some firmware updates introduced bugs. We haven't tested it ourselves. Pick it if battery life and toughness matter most for hiking, camping or training. If you want maps or a color screen, look elsewhere.

What To Know
- Solar figures assume 3 hours a day in bright sunlight; indoors you get the non-solar figures
- No on-watch maps; you can follow loaded courses with breadcrumbs, according to HikingGuy
- Amazon may pool ratings across colors
- Our photo shows the previous Instinct 2 Solar, which has the same case shape and round sub-display. The Instinct 3 adds the flashlight and a reinforced bezel
- HikingGuy recommends checking Garmin's forum for firmware issues before updating
Pros
- Battery life measured in weeks, not days
- Rugged, 10 ATM case
- Amazon.com among the new offers on the listing we checked
Cons
- Monochrome screen
- No maps
- Interface less polished than Garmin's premium watches, per HikingGuy
Alternatives
- Garmin Instinct E (45mm) — The lower-cost Instinct. Garmin says the Instinct 3 adds a metal-reinforced bezel, the LED flashlight and either solar charging or an AMOLED screen, so the E fits if you charge regularly and don't need those.View on Amazon
- Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED (45mm) — The same rugged design with a bright color AMOLED screen instead of solar charging. Check Garmin's battery figures, since the color screen gives up the solar top-up.View on Amazon
Why PriceDropIQ Selected It
If you hike, camp or train outdoors and hate charging, this is the watch to consider. The solar-assisted battery lasts weeks, the screen is readable in full sun, and it shrugs off knocks and water. A hands-on review from HikingGuy supports the battery claims. Skip it if you want maps or a color screen.
Before You Buy
- Check that the listing says Instinct 3 Solar, not AMOLED or Instinct E

Frequently Asked Questions
Does solar really mean unlimited battery?
Only in Garmin's test conditions: all-day wear with 3 hours a day outside at 50,000 lux. With less sun you get somewhere between that and the 28-day non-solar figure.
Does it have maps?
No maps are listed in Garmin's specs. HikingGuy notes you can follow loaded courses with breadcrumbs and off-course alerts.
What's the difference between the Solar and AMOLED versions?
Garmin offers the Instinct 3 with either solar charging and a memory-in-pixel screen, or a bright color AMOLED screen without solar. The Solar version is the one for maximum battery life.
