Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller

Nintendo's own full-size controller for Switch 2: rear GL/GR buttons, a C button, a headphone jack and a battery Nintendo rates at about 40 hours — a comfort upgrade for docked play, not a requirement.

Quick verdict

Yes, if you play your Switch 2 docked on a TV and want a full-size grip. Nintendo's Switch 2 Pro Controller adds two assignable rear buttons, a C button, a headphone jack and a battery Nintendo rates at about 40 hours. Handheld players don't need it, and third-party controllers copy much of the layout for less.

Our Take

The Switch 2 Pro Controller is the first-party option for anyone who plays Switch 2 on a TV and finds the Joy-Con 2 cramped. Nintendo's specifications list everything a full-size pad should have plus three things the original Switch Pro Controller lacked: two assignable rear buttons (GL and GR), a C button, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It keeps the motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope), HD Rumble 2 and NFC for amiibo, and it charges over USB-C. Nintendo rates the 1070 mAh battery at about 40 hours per charge and about 3.5 hours to recharge. Those are Nintendo's figures; we haven't tested battery life or build quality ourselves. The trade-off is cost: licensed third-party pads now copy most of the layout, including the C button, for less. Buy this one if you want Nintendo's own hardware, full motion and rumble support, and the longest rated battery life, and you'll use it often enough to justify the premium.

Why PriceDropIQ Selected It

For long docked sessions, the Joy-Con 2 can feel small. Nintendo's own Pro Controller adds full-size grips, rear buttons and about 40 hours of battery, with compatibility you don't have to wonder about. Thousands of owners rate it 4.8 on Amazon. It's an upgrade, though, not something you need to play.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the battery last?

Nintendo estimates about 40 hours per charge and about 3.5 hours to recharge over USB-C. Rumble and a plugged-in headset will shorten that.

Can I plug headphones into it?

Yes. Nintendo lists a 4-pole 3.5mm headphone jack (CTIA standard) and notes it can't guarantee every headset works.

Is this the Zelda edition?

No. The Zelda 40th Anniversary Pro Controller is a separate edition sold through Nintendo's own store. This review covers the standard black controller sold on Amazon.
