Echo Dot vs Dot Max
Echo Dot vs Echo Dot Max: Which Alexa Speaker Should You Get?
How Amazon's Echo Dot and Echo Dot Max differ in sound, smart home hub support, sensors and warranty, and when the cheaper Dot is all you need.
Updated October 21, 2026
Short answer
Get the Echo Dot if you mainly want voice control, timers, weather and casual music in a small room. Get the Echo Dot Max if you want fuller sound or plan to build a smart home: it adds a tweeter and woofer, and works as a Zigbee hub and Thread border router as well as a Matter controller, so many lights, locks and sensors can connect without a separate hub. Both are mono speakers on their own.

Do you need the Echo Dot Max as a smart home hub?
Only if your devices use Zigbee or Thread. Amazon lists the Dot Max as a Zigbee hub and a Thread border router, so devices built on those standards can pair to it directly. The regular Dot supports Matter over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but not Zigbee or Thread.
Plenty of smart devices don't need either. TP-Link's Tapo DL110 lock, for example, connects straight to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and works with Alexa, so either speaker can control it. Check each device's listing for the protocol it uses before choosing.

Amazon says the Dot Max delivers nearly 3x the bass of the Echo Dot (2022 release), from a separate tweeter and woofer instead of one driver, and adjusts its sound to the room. Neither is stereo on its own: Amazon lists both as mono, and you can pair two Dot Max speakers for stereo.
For background music, podcasts and kitchen radio, the regular Dot is enough. If music is a main reason for buying, the Dot Max is the better single speaker.
Sensors and routines
Both can run routines from built-in sensors. The Dot uses motion and indoor temperature. The Dot Max adds what Amazon calls Omnisense: presence detection, temperature, ambient light and tap gestures, so routines can run on temperature or presence.
Privacy settings to check
Both have a button that turns the microphones off. Amazon's Dot Max listing also notes that Amazon Sidewalk is turned on unless you've previously turned it off, and that you can turn it off at any time.
Who should get which
- Echo Dot: a bedroom, office or kitchen speaker for voice control, timers and casual listening.
- Echo Dot Max: fuller sound in one speaker, or a first hub for Zigbee and Thread devices.
- Skip both: if your home runs on Apple Home or Google Home, choose a speaker from that system instead.
