Our Take

A jump starter lets you start a car with a flat battery on your own, without a second car or jumper cables. NOCO rates the GB40 at 1,000 amps peak for 12-volt lead-acid batteries, gas engines up to 6.0 liters and diesel engines up to 3.0 liters, with up to 20 jump starts per charge. The clamps are spark-proof and protected against reverse polarity, so connecting them the wrong way round doesn't cause a spark. NOCO lists a 24 Wh lithium battery, a USB port that charges a phone, a 100-lumen flashlight with seven modes including SOS, an IP65 rating against dust and water, 2.45 lb, and a one-year warranty. It recharges over USB-C in about three hours at 2.1 amps. The limit is engine size: a big V8 truck or a larger diesel needs NOCO's bigger GB50 or GB70. And it starts a car; it doesn't fix a battery that keeps going flat. We haven't tested it ourselves.

Why PriceDropIQ Selected It

A dead battery on a cold morning is the most common reason a car won't start, and a jump starter in the glovebox gets you going without waiting for help or a second car. The GB40 covers most cars and small SUVs, and its clamps won't spark if you connect them the wrong way round. For a big diesel or a V8 truck, choose the GB50 or GB70.

Before You Buy

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it start my truck?

NOCO rates the GB40 for gas engines up to 6.0 liters and diesel engines up to 3.0 liters. For larger engines, NOCO sells the GB50 and GB70.

Is it safe if I connect the clamps the wrong way?

NOCO says the GB40 is spark-proof and has reverse polarity protection, so it won't send power if the clamps are reversed.

Can it charge my phone?

Yes. NOCO lists a USB output of 5 volts and 2.1 amps, and the GB40 recharges over USB-C in about three hours.
