Philips Hue Indoor Motion Sensor
A small battery-powered motion sensor that turns Philips Hue lights on when you walk in and off when you leave. It needs a Hue Bridge and at least one Hue light.
Quick verdict
Yes, if you have Philips Hue lights and a Hue Bridge and want hallway, stair or closet lights to switch on when someone walks in. The Philips Hue Motion Sensor runs on two included AAA batteries and only turns lights on when the room is darker than a level you set. It needs a Hue Bridge, works only with Hue lights, is for indoor use, and can miss someone who sits very still.
- Best for:
- Hue lights that switch on as you walk in.
- Watch out:
- Needs a Hue Bridge and Hue lights.

Our Take
This sensor does one job: it switches your Hue lights when someone moves past. Philips says it runs on two AAA batteries (included), mounts on a wall or stands on a shelf, and has a daylight sensor, so the lights only come on when the room is darker than a level you set in the app. It is rated IP42 and Philips says it's for indoor use only. The catch is the system: Philips requires a Hue Bridge, and it only controls Hue lights. It's a PIR motion sensor, so like any motion sensor it can miss someone who sits very still. That's fine for hallways, stairs and closets, less so for a reading chair. It's also an easy way to make Halloween lights react when guests walk in. We haven't tested it ourselves.

What To Know
- Philips requires a Hue Bridge; it doesn't work with the Hue app over Bluetooth alone
- A motion sensor can miss people who sit very still; a presence sensor handles that better
- On the listing we checked, the seller was a third party (Quiverr) and Amazon shipped it; we found no Amazon.com offer
- Our photo is Philips's press image of the original 2016 sensor; the current model looks the same

Why PriceDropIQ Selected It
If you already have Hue lights, this is the simplest way to stop reaching for the switch in hallways, closets and on the stairs: stick it up, set how dark the room must be, and the lights follow you. It needs a Hue Bridge and only drives Hue lights. If your problem is lights going off while you sit still, look at a presence sensor instead.
Before You Buy
- Check you have a Hue Bridge (or budget for one)
- Make sure the lights you want to control are Philips Hue
- Check the listing says indoor motion sensor, not the outdoor version
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it work without a Hue Bridge?
No. Philips Hue says a Bridge is required, along with at least one Hue light.
Can I use it outside?
No. Philips rates it IP42 for indoor use only. The Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor is the weatherproof version.
Will lights turn off while I'm sitting still?
They can. A motion sensor reacts to movement, so someone reading may stop triggering it. A presence sensor is designed for that case.
