Bialetti Moka Express (6-Cup)

The original aluminum stovetop moka pot, in the 6-cup size. It makes strong, espresso-style coffee on gas or electric stoves for little money, with no capsules or power needed.

Quick verdict

Yes, if you want strong, espresso-style coffee on the stove without buying a machine. The Bialetti Moka Express 6-cup makes about 250–280 ml, roughly two mugs, because Bialetti counts cups as small espresso servings. The aluminum pot needs an adapter plate for induction, has to be rinsed by hand without detergent, and doesn't make true espresso.

Best for:
Strong coffee without a machine.
Watch out:
Not for induction as is.

Our Take

The Moka Express is the coffee maker found in most Italian kitchens. Fill the base with water up to the safety valve, add ground coffee to the funnel, and heat it on the stove until the coffee rises into the top chamber. Bialetti counts cups as small espresso-sized servings, and lists the 6-cup size at roughly 250–280 ml, so it makes about two mugs of strong coffee. It isn't true espresso, but it's rich and intense. The aluminum pot doesn't work on induction without Bialetti's adapter plate. Bialetti says to rinse it with warm water and no detergent; it isn't dishwasher-safe. The gasket and funnel are sold as replacement parts. We haven't tested it ourselves.
