Our Take

The Set & Forget's party trick is the probe. Hamilton Beach says you insert the thermometer probe into a roast or chicken, set the temperature you want, and the cooker shifts to warm once the meat gets there, so it doesn't overcook while you're out. You can also run it by time (program mode) or as a plain low/high slow cooker (manual mode). The 6-quart crock fits a 6 lb chicken or a 4 lb roast, according to Hamilton Beach, and a gasketed lid clips down for carrying it to a potluck. Hamilton Beach also lists power-interrupt protection, which keeps it running through a brief outage. The limits: it only slow-cooks, with no searing or pressure-cooking. Some owners find the blue display hard to read in bright light, and America's Test Kitchen's current favorite is a different Hamilton Beach model. We haven't cooked with it ourselves. Pick it if you mostly slow-cook meat and want it held at the right temperature instead of on a fixed timer.

Why PriceDropIQ Selected It

The temperature probe is the reason to pick this over a basic slow cooker. It switches to warm when the meat reaches your target, so you don't come home to overcooked food. The clip-down lid makes it easy to take to a potluck. If you want pressure cooking too, a multicooker fits better.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the probe mode work?

You put the probe in the meat and set a target temperature. Hamilton Beach says the cooker shows the meat's temperature as it cooks and switches to warm when it reaches your target.

What fits in 6 quarts?

Hamilton Beach says it fits a 6 lb chicken or a 4 lb roast, which suits most family recipes.

Can I carry it with food inside?

Yes. The lid clips down with a gasket to reduce spills while you carry it. Keep it upright and use the handles.

Does the Set and Forget slow cooker keep cooking after a power cut?

After a brief one, yes. Hamilton Beach lists power interrupt protection, which keeps the slow cooker on during a brief power outage. For a longer outage, check the food and the display when the power returns.
