Levi's 501 Original Fit Jeans (Rigid)
The original button-fly straight jean in rigid, non-stretch denim. It starts stiff and dark and fades to fit you over time.
Quick verdict
Yes, if you want a classic straight-leg jean in sturdy, non-stretch denim that fades to fit you over time. The rigid Levi's 501 starts stiff and dark, has a button fly, and may transfer dye. If you want stretch and comfort from day one or a slimmer leg, choose a different fit.
- Best for:
- A classic jean that ages with you.
- Watch out:
- Stiff at first; can bleed dye.

Our Take
The 501 is Levi's original jean, sold since 1873, and the Rigid version is the closest to how it began. Levi's describes the Original Fit as sitting at the waist, regular through the thigh, with a straight leg and the signature button fly. The Amazon listing gives a 16-inch leg opening and an 11¼-inch front rise based on a size 32. Rigid means raw-feeling, non-stretch cotton denim that arrives stiff and dark and softens and fades with wear, as in our photo. The trade-offs: sizing differs from stretch jeans, there's no give at first, and dark indigo can transfer onto light fabrics early on. Levi's recommends washing inside out and not too often. We haven't tested them ourselves. Choose them if you want a classic straight jean that ages with you. Pick a stretch or pre-washed 501 if you want comfort from day one.

Why PriceDropIQ Selected It
It's the original straight jean, and the rigid version is for people who want denim that softens and fades to their own shape over years. It's tougher than stretch jeans and doesn't go out of style. Expect a stiff first few weeks, or pick a pre-washed 501 if you want comfort from day one.
