Our Take

Magna-Tiles are colorful see-through plastic squares and triangles with magnets along their edges, so they click together into walls, towers and 3D shapes without instructions. The Classic 100-Piece Set is the brand's big starter box. Magna-Tiles lists 50 squares, 4 large squares, 20 equilateral triangles, 11 right triangles and 15 isosceles triangles, a suggested age of 3 and up, and tiles made from MABS plastic free of BPA, phthalates and latex, with rivets holding the magnets in place. Every Magna-Tiles set is compatible with every other, so add-on sets work with this one. The trade-off is price: at about $120 it costs roughly three times a 100-piece set from a look-alike brand. We haven't tested magnet strength or durability against those brands ourselves. The box carries a choking-hazard warning, so it isn't for children under 3, and a cracked tile should come out of play. Pick it if you want the original brand for a family or classroom and plan to add sets later.
