Our Take

Blokus is the rare strategy game you can teach in a minute. Each player gets 21 pieces in one color, and the only rule is that every new piece must touch one of your own pieces at a corner, never along a side. As the board fills up, you block other players' paths while keeping your own open, and the game ends when nobody can place another piece; the player with the fewest squares left over wins. Mattel lists 84 pieces, a game tray and a scorepad, for two to four players aged 7 and up, and the pieces carry patterns that identify each color for players with color blindness. Because there are no words or numbers on the pieces, it works across ages and languages. It's at its best with four; with fewer players it's still fun but less crowded, and the pieces are small, so keep them away from young children. We haven't tested it ourselves.

Why PriceDropIQ Selected It

If you want a game everyone at the table can learn in a minute, from a 7-year-old to a grandparent, Blokus is a strong pick. There's one rule and no reading, yet blocking your opponents makes every move count. It's best with four players; for two, Azul gives more decisions per turn, and for a bigger group a card game like UNO Flip! fits better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can two people play Blokus?

Yes. Mattel lists two to four players. It's most crowded, and most tense, with four.

How do you win?

The game ends when no one can place another piece. Players count the squares on their leftover pieces, and the lowest number wins.

Is Blokus good for color-blind players?

Mattel says the pieces carry unique patterns that identify each color, so players with any form of color blindness can play.
